Josine Timmer and Roosmarijn Schoonwelle
Josine Timmer, together with Roosmarijn Schoonewelle, forms an artist duo: Timmer & Schoonewelle, who have been working together since 2019. In their individual practices, both Schoonewelle and Timmer work primarily on paper, creating drawings, gouaches and watercolors. Over the years they have both collected a large collection of sketches, cuttings, starters, tests, painted residual sheets and 'failed' drawings: unfinished work that they want to use later. With these collected pieces, Timmer and Schoonewelle together create collages in various formats, from small A5 collages to wall-filling assemblages on location. In these collages the worlds of Timmer and Schoonewelle come together. Repetition, rhythm, color and improvisation play a crucial role in the creation of these new works. Both artists refer to everyday life, where everything is constantly moving, growing and decomposing. Things take shape and merge back into the bigger picture. Cut-out pieces of drawings are put together, forming new works, and then taken apart again to create something new.
Josine Timmer draws and paints with light lines and a refined touch, detailed and flowing in a meandering rhythm. The repetition and rhythm of lines often create an evocative landscape in which the viewer can wander. This mask lay in her studio for a long time before it found its final form. The work was completed in stages and experienced a birth and move. The first drawing with pencil lines was partially hidden under paint and a collage of pieces from other drawings. What is revealed and what remains hidden?
