The Untangled Tales in the FilmKoepel
Film program in collaboration with FilmKoepel Haarlem, inspired by the exhibition
On January 14, 2025 we will organize in the FilmKoepel in Haarlem a special film evening that is entirely dedicated to the exhibition The Untangled Tales by Michelle Piergoelam.
The Untangled Tales is a photo series of stories of hope and resilience, showing the ways in which oral traditions, traditions and code language provide us with insight into the years of slavery and the period after in Suriname.
In this theme the Filmkoepel shows the film Mother Suriname. With colored, never-before-seen archive footage, author and filmmaker Tessa Leuwsha tells the personal story of a Surinamese washerwoman, inspired by her grandmother. In doing so, she creates a compelling ode to all Surinamese women throughout the centuries, from the abolition of slavery in 1863 to independence in 1975.
The evening will start with an introduction by Kim Knoppers, guest curator of the exhibition, followed by an artist talk with Michelle Piergoelam.
