the silent love of kees verwey

Kees Verwey (1900-1995) preferred to paint in his studio at 108 Spaarne in Haarlem. He expressed his own thoughts about his painting in 1978: 'The same formula can be found in all the subjects I have made over the years: look, but look differently each time [...] because looking is experiencing and to the experience is to do it for me. The longer I look, the stronger the experience I get from it.'

The exhibition focuses on his still lifes, but there are also many portraits. Verwey approached both themes in the same way. All painterly aspects of paint and color treatment, and his handling of light are equally important in both his still lifes and his portraits.

City walks

In collaboration with Guild Haarlem city walks are organized, where you can learn more about the life and work of Kees Verwey. After the walk you will visit the exhibition accompanied by the guide.
