Open Monument Days | Corn Ribbon 2025
13 and 14 September
In our museum you can now discover everything about the history of Haarlem, but the former St. Elisabeth or Groote Gasthuis (Great Hospital) used to be located here. The adjacent almshouses (numbers 63 to 85) also belonged to the hospital. The income from renting out these houses covered, among other things, the hospital's expenses. For the hospital's expansion in 1931, the houses, except for the facades, were demolished. The old entrance gate to the hospital on Groot Heiligland dates back to the 17th century.
TIP! Discover the history of this extensive building during a 15-minute walking tour of the former St. Elisabeth's or Groote Gasthuis! Combine this with a visit to the permanent exhibition. All Haarlemmers, over 1000 years of history of the city.
Or visit the exhibitions we're organizing to celebrate Kees Verwey's 125th anniversary. Let yourself be transported by impressive studio pieces, powerful portraits, and the artists who inspired Verwey. With works by greats like Breitner, Israels, and Sluijters. More information here.
