jeanne verwey-tilbusscher – more than a muse

until October 26, 2025

Anyone who wants to understand the life of Kees Verwey cannot ignore Jeanne Tilbusscher. As a wife, muse and silent force, she played an indispensable role in his existence. Yet her own artistic talent remained underexposed for a long time. High time to put her in the spotlight.

The exhibition not only shows the beautiful portraits that Verwey painted of his wife, but also brings her own artistic work into the picture for the first time. Haarlem under the spotlight. Jeanne was much more than just Verwey's support and confidant: she was a gifted needle artist with a versatile oeuvre that extended beyond textiles. In addition to refined brand and darning patches, embroidery, patchwork and a beaded knitted bag, she also made drawings and watercolors.

In her embroidery, visibly influenced by Verwey’s painting, Jeanne opted for colorful, loose stitches and playful compositions – a subtle but powerful echo of the expressiveness that so characterized her husband. With an intimate presentation, we not only honor the woman behind the painter, but also make room for an artist who deserves her own place in the spotlight. Jeanne Tilbusscher, the silent force behind Kees Verwey, finally steps forward herself.
