Kees Verwey
Kees Verwey made a name for himself in the 20th century as a painter, watercolorist and draftsman. He was also known for his stubborn, contrary personality.
Verwey was born in Haarlem, in a family of painters, poets and architects, and is considered a true representative of the school of the classics, but with his own 'twist'. His themes consist of colour and form, flowers and decay, women, objects and matter, all painted in his studio on the Spaarne under constantly changing light and atmosphere.
Verwey lived to be 95 years old and his work spans almost a century, which gives his oeuvre an extra charge. His mischievous, sometimes irascible personality and his refusal to bow to any trend or movement, give his work a completely unique character. It is abundantly clear that Verwey comes to his full glory in his portraits of women, his studio pieces and flower watercolors in ever-changing colors and compositions.
