free guided tours on International Women's Day

Celebrate International Women's Day on Sunday, March 8th at the museum with a special, free tour focusing on women's stories.

Portraits of women

The tour begins with Kees Verwey's portraits of women. He often painted women from his immediate circle, such as his mother Jacqueline Bienfait, his wife Jeanne Tilbusscher, and his good friend, sculptor Charlotte van Pallandt.

Verwey shared a close bond with his mother, calling Jeanne his guardian angel and muse—a role she is assigned in countless works. At the same time, Jeanne is much more than just a model: she is a teacher, a gifted needleworker, and a talented draftsman and watercolorist. Charlotte van Pallandt is a strong woman and an important artistic ally. They visit exhibitions together, speak daily well into old age, and immortalize each other in their work. In this exhibition, you will meet these and other remarkable women who played a role in Verwey's life and hear the stories behind their mutual bond.

Rest and Remember

The tour continues at Rest and Remember, the first overview exhibition in Haarlem by the internationally recognized artist Jacobien de Rooij. For over half a century, De Rooij has been building an impressive oeuvre that is included in countless museum, corporate, and private collections at home and abroad.

The long, successful career she has already built is not a hindrance, but rather a source of strength. In the spirit of American author Susan Gubar, who in her recently published book Grand Finales: The Creative Longevity of Women Artists In describing older female artists who refuse to be pigeonholed into “Little-old-lady-land,” De Rooij shows that growing older offers space and freedom for innovation.
