studio in picture x film dome

On Thursday, December 11, we are organizing a special film evening in collaboration with the FilmKoepel, entirely dedicated to the exhibition Atelier in Beeld, On display at our museum until January 18th. After an introduction by participating artist Hans de Bruijn, his short films of choice will be screened. In this personal introduction, De Bruijn will explain his selection of these documentaries, show his own artist portraits, and share related anecdotes about these iconic artists and their studios.

About the exhibition

The studio is the heart of the artist's life. What is often an inaccessible and therefore mythical place for outsiders is revealed here in a personal way. Enter the wondrous world of the studio and see the art created there with new eyes. Photos and studio pieces by Kees Verwey are complemented by portraits of contemporary artists, including Marlene Dumas, Levi van Veluw, and Folkert de Jong, captured in their own studios by the artist. Haarlemphotographer Hans de Bruijn for his book 90 Artist PortraitsThe portraits form a captivating dialogue between Verwey's historical workspace and that of the current generation of artists, thus creating a dialogue between the past and the present.

About Dutch masters

Dutch Masters in the 21st century presents a series of important current Dutch artists in their studios, seen through the eyes of renowned filmmakers. This behind-the-scenes look offers insight into the artists' working methods, use of materials, and ideas about art. The studio portraits are not strictly informative mini-documentaries, but rather snapshots. The workspace, and what's happening there at that moment, serves as the starting point for the fifteen-minute films.

Hans de Bruijn has selected five short documentaries from this series, featuring artists he has also photographed:

Mark Manders
Natasja Kensmil - You want it darker
Folkert de Jong
Bertien van Manen
Guido van der Werve
