black snow
January 16 to June 28, 2026
Black Snow is a compelling multimedia project by photographer Harm van de Poel about life around Tata Steel, the imposing steel factory on the coast of IJmuiden. In a region where many depend on the employment the factory provides, while others worry about the problems it causes, Van de Poel exposes the tensions and nuances of this complex reality.
In a photo series, Van de Poel portrays the landscape, the industry, and the community. He uses symbolism, details, interiors, traces of pollution, and portraits to create a visually rich and personal narrative. The exhibition reveals both the visible pollution and its less tangible effects: economic dependence, residents' concerns, employees' pride, and the looming threat of health damage.
The exhibition tells a powerful, multi-voiced, and historical story. The photo series is complemented by audio and video footage from (former) employees, local residents, journalists, and policymakers. The present is also placed in historical perspective with archival material and an overview of important milestones, benchmarks, and low points: from the founding of Tata Steel to the first protests by local residents. Black Snow shows how complex, layered and anything but black and white the situation is.
