watercolors – verwey on a journey
Jan 20 – Mar 30, 2025
Most tourists record their travels with a camera, but artists like to use a sketchbook for this. Verwey is no exception. He makes quick drawings and watercolours during his travels. Not made for sale or to exhibit, but simply for his own pleasure. Verwey travels to Italy twice around 1960. Between approx. 1960 and 1970, his destination is France and England. Only a few anecdotes are known about his travels, which he makes with or without his wife Jeanne Tilbusscher.
Yet Verwey does not travel much. His world is mainly set in his beloved studio on the Spaarne. Searching, looking and recording what you see – the light, the lines, the colours and the atmosphere – it is a necessity of life for Verwey. 'When I paint, I am travelling and when I paint at home, so too', Verwey writes to Godfried Bomans. watercolors - Verwey on a journey shows private watercolors that the master made during his travels.
